About USTC

The US Transport Council was launched as a coalition in April 2002 to provide factual information about nuclear materials transportation experience, safety, emergency planning and security.

The Council’s charter membership includes leading transportation companies and customers. Since its formation, the Council has established itself as a leading voice on nuclear materials transportation, particularly potential spent fuel transportation to the proposed Yucca Mountain federal storage facility. The US Congress ratified President Bush’s February 15, 2002, recommendation to proceed with the licensing of the site in July 2002.

The Council’s initiatives include educating the American public, the Congress and the media with respect to the fact about nuclear materials transportation and safety.

To this end, the Council organized a Capitol Hill Summit in Washington, D.C. in 2002 focusing on the nuclear industry’s successful safety track record; transport technology and emergency planning and security.

Council leaders have also presented the views of the industry to a U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure joint hearing on spent fuel transportation. The Council has launched a web site (www.ustransportcouncil.org) to provide accurate information on spent fuel transportation.
